Jaume Sánchez Elias

UX/UI Engineer, DeepMind

I was born in Barcelona. I was 7 when my father brought home a bulky 8086 PC with a phosphor CRT monitor that blew my mind. I learned Logo, drew ASCII art on WordStar, and discovered BASIC, then Turbo Basic and then Turbo C. Later in the mid 90s I started as a 2D/3D artist on demoscene productions. I learned Assembler, C and C++. I missed the train of 3D APIs when the first GPUs appeared. I worked for many years developing all types of software -network analysis tools, video surveillance, video games, backends of all kinds- and later web development. In 2010 I had the chance to work on The Wilderness Downtown experience, which led to a series of collaborations with B-Reel and other production companies and ad agencies, and eventually to open the B-Reel office in Barcelona. I later worked for Google on developer tools for Chrome, and then joined DeepMind in 2017 to work on visualisation and tools to improve the researchers’ workflow. I like to experiment with what’s possible with the web technology that it’s constantly being rolled out: WebGL, WebVR/WebXR, 3D graphics, generative art, devtools, and more, most of which I release as open source. Now with two kids it is a bit more difficult to find the time to get everything done, but in the end fun, discovery and sharing is what is important.
