Venue

For the second year, GitHub Universe is taking place at the Palace of Fine Arts—the historic site of the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition and one of the most photographed buildings in the city. After World War II, it was also a military storage depot, a warehouse for the Parks Department, and even a telephone book distribution center.

Inside Universe

Come for the sessions. Stay for the art installations, personalized Octocat stickers, and so much more. Here are some must-see spots while you’re exploring all that Universe has to offer.

Sponsor Demos

Discover new developer tools in the GitHub ecosystem, meet the teams behind them, and check out interactive art installations and demos from software companies that are shaping the industry.

Octocat Generator

Customize our multi-tentacled mascot with the makeup, moustaches, and props that best represent you. Then print a sticker or share across the social interwebs.

GitHub Shop

Take home a Universe t-shirt—and maybe a water bottle, a baby onesie, and hoodie too. All GitHub Shop proceeds go to nonprofits Frauenloop and Direct Relief during Universe, so you can support good causes while you shop.

City guide

There’s plenty to do in San Francisco. If you’re traveling from out of town, we recommend staying a few extra days to explore Northern California.

Where to stay

Most of San Francisco’s hotels are in the Union Square and SoMa neighborhoods. These areas have easy access to public transportation and plenty to do when you aren’t at Universe. Unfortunately, hotel prices can be high, and we recommend Airbnb as an alternative.

If you plan to stay at a hotel, we request that you stay at a socially responsible hotel endorsed by fairhotel.org such as:
