Meet us at the edge of the bay in San Francisco’s Marina District. Rebuilt after the 1906 earthquake, you’ll find shops, parks, and trails against picturesque views of the Golden Gate Bridge.

This year Universe is taking place at the Palace of Fine Arts—the historic site of the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exhibition and one of the most photographed buildings in the city. After World War II it was also a military storage depot, a warehouse for the Parks Department, and even a telephone book distribution center.

City guide

There’s plenty to do in San Francisco. If you’re traveling from out of town, we recommend staying a few extra days to explore Northern California.

Where to stay

Most of San Francisco’s hotels are in the Union Square and SoMa neighborhoods. These areas have easy access to public transportation and plenty to do when you aren’t at Universe. Unfortunately, hotel prices can be high, and we recommend Airbnb as an alternative.

If you plan to stay at a hotel, we request that you stay at a socially responsible hotel endorsed by fairhotel.org such as:

  • Intercontinental Mark Hopkins (map)
  • The Clift Royal Sonesta Hotel (map)
  • Hotel Vitale (map)
  • Hotel Zephyr (map)

Where to eat and drink

San Francisco has some of the best bars and restaurants in the world. No trip to the city would be complete without visiting a few of our favorites.
